Senior Copywriter & Content Strategist

Howdy.

My name’s Zachariah, but most people call me Zach.

I’ve worked as a writer for more than a decade. Curiosity, creativity and attention to detail drive me. This is my portfolio.

Foundation in Journalism

For the first half of my career, I was a culture writer and journalist writing for outlets like The Oregonian and Willamette Week. My favorite stories always involved artists and artisans like movie directors, novelists, chefs, fashion designers and more.

Journalism helped me develop skills that translate across many industries. I learned how to dive deep into research, identify powerful themes, and distill complex information into easy-to-understand language. Willamette Week specifically gave me a strong base in content design, delivery and analytics—one piece earned me an “Honorable Mention” in the “Innovation/Format Buster” category for the 2017 AAN awards.

Telling Stories for Consumers

The tools I honed as a journalist served me well as I transitioned to the corporate world. Working for Schoolhouse, my highly collaborative team specialized in creating content that was scalable, accessible, and that translated to real business impact.

Since 2019, I’ve worked on Nike’s Global Product Writing team where I execute story concepts and messaging, in addition to editing and coaching a small team of writers.

In this role, I’ve written for collaborations with brands like Parra, Stüssy, and Jacquemus, as well as crossover celebrities like Kobe Bryant and Kendrick Lamar.

My recent work has focused on fashion and apparel brands, but I’m always interested in expanding my repertoire, working in new industries, and developing new areas of expertise.

Farm Life

When I’m not working as a writer, my life in the country outside Clatskanie, Oregon keeps me plenty busy. My wife Becca and I own a c. 1880 farmhouse situated on two acres, which means I moonlight as a handyman more often than not. I also tend to our large kitchen garden along with ducks, goats and more than a dozen varieties of fruit trees. During the rainy months, I design and build furniture in my shop.

I’m also more than a little bit obsessed with mushrooms. It started with foraging for the dinner table when I was a kid. Recently, I’ve begun working with real mycologists to document the fungal diversity (beyond just edible species) in the Coast Range where I live.

Don’t Be a Stranger.

Feel free to get in touch. My resume is the one that looks like a paperclip.
